This was a common sight around Toronto. Here my dash cam caught a transformer (one of the few left functioning) exploding into a ball of fire in the Leaside Neighbourhood.
Mayor Rob Ford also showed up to tour Sunnybrook Hospital in the heart of Leaside. This world renowned hospital had been on backup power since Friday evening and it was now Sunday evening.
The critical care wards in the heart of the hospital looked fine but officials were very concerned that battery and diesel power supplies were diminishing.
Mayor Ford and Chief Sales speak to each other at Sunnybrook hospital. Fire crews were on scene to provide technical support since the hospital had been on backup power for nearly 48 hours. Many hospitals in Toronto had major power outage issues.
Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area as a whole is a very busy and densely populated area full of people who drive. At the height of the power outage there were only 25 of about 200 gas stations in the city operating and even less in the suburbs.
As night enveloped the city, residential streets became booby traps and mazes. There was no way of knowing what lay ahead and many times I found myself at an impasse or almost touching downed wires. The hazards were everywhere.
Back in Vaughan, without most of the old growth trees and overhead wires, getting around was much easier but the ice accretion was easily double Toronto. This street 1km from my home looked like a Tornado had struck
To see this type of damage was unbelievable, it literally looks like tornado damage!
The tree to the left has completely collapsed only leaving the base/stump. Incredible.
Even with EF1 tornadoes they sometimes don't even produce this kind of damage.
